Many travelers love to combine their safari with a little bit of relaxation on a beautiful stretch of coastline. Places where palm trees sway gently, and cocktails and sunsets make a daily exchange. It’s pleasing to know that there are a few places that don’t immediately spring to mind – those which you wouldn’t otherwise consider unless you were ‘in the know’… For this reason, they are much less frequented and therefore perfect for those that are looking for more seclusion and a healthy dose of escapism, before heading back home to the reality of life and routine.

Lake Malawi

For the final leg of your African discovery, you’ll spend some time on the never-ending shorelines of Lake Malawi. A landlocked country, Lake Malawi accounts for a third of Malawi’s territory and with its beautiful beaches and luscious islands, gives the illusion of being in some far-off archipelago.
David Livingstone famously named Lake Malawi “The Lake of Stars” and for good reason, during the day the light dances across the deep blue water and once the sun has set the stars twinkle brightly both in the sky but also on the lake as the fishermen light up their hurricane lamps for their night on the lake. It is a truly beautiful place and a fantastic destination for swimming, scuba diving or just relaxing on the sandy beaches.

Lake Tanganyika

Bordering four countries, Lake Tanganyika is the longest freshwater lake in the world. Considered one of Africa’s great lakes, it is second only to Lake Baikal in Siberia for depth, volume and age. This ‘landlocked sea’ covers 12,700 square miles and stretches from Burundi to Zambia, with the majority in Tanzania (46%).

When standing on the lake’s sandy beaches – staring across the glassy blue waters to the horizon – this great expanse of water appears more like an ocean than a freshwater lake. It’s a truly beautiful place where you can

Mozambique
